He struggled to fit in while studying in school due to his racial background and due to his sexuality.

In 2019, Jussie was arrested and charged by the city of Chicago after he reportedly lied to police when he accused 2 masked men of physically and verbally attacking him near his Chicago home. His trial started in November 2021 at the Leighton Courts Building in Chicago. In December 2021, he was found guilty of 5 felony charges. In March 2022, he was sentenced to 150 days in jail. Additionally, he would have to serve 30 months of felony probation and would be paying a fine of $25,000. However, Jussie was later released after an appeals court ruled that he could be released from prison after spending 6 days of his 150 sentence locked up. In March 2023, his legal team decided to appeal the sentence and filed court documents, claiming that the sentence should be dropped.

In October 2023, it was revealed that Jussie had decided to enter a treatment facility.
